How Do You Crack A Coconut

how do you crack a coconut

You guys, I am so crazy excited about this post, I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. It might not look like much, I mean, there aren t even any pretty pictures to look at or anything

So what can I possibly be so excited about, you wonder. Trust me and read on. This is PRICELESS.

For the first time EVER, I am sharing a video with you all. And not just any video, a video that I made myself.

Okay, now this was my first time shooting and editing video, so please, go easy on me. The poor quality of the offering won t prevent you from getting all the valuable information that it is meant to offer. And THAT is what s important.

You see, I LOVE LOVE LOVE fresh coconut with a passion, but I used to never eat it because cracking open that hard shell to get to the precious meat was a task that I deemed quite darn close to impossible to accomplish. I d tried every possible technique, from using a hammer, saw or power drill, to slipping the thing into a pillow case and smashing it against hard concrete. All very messy and sometimes dangerous. procedures that didn t yield the best results and often left me very frustrated and essentially coconutless, too.

That was until one day, I learned this SUPER EASY AND QUICK technique for getting the job done using nothing but a good old chef knife. Seriously, that method is so easy that, once you ve mastered it, you ll be cracking coconut after coconut and will be able to enjoy it in its fresh form anytime you want.

So, without further ado, here goes. Hope you enjoy.

And now that you know how to operate these coconuts like a champ, next time, we ll be making Fresh Coconut Milk from scratch.

You will not believe how good that stuff is.

If you ve ever stared a coconut and been baffled by how to go about getting in there to get the goods out, don t worry--you re not alone. But guess what. It s probably way easier than you think.

If you re planning on preparing your own coconut milk which entails blending the meat with the juice and some added water, you ll want to make sure to drain and collect all of the juice either by poking a hole through one of the eyes of the coconut there s usually one soft one, and draining the juice into a bowl or by opening the coconut directly over a bowl. To save on mess, choose the poke-the-eye-and-drain method of the two.

The rest is pretty simple. If you look at your coconut, you ll notice an imperfect equator line that runs around the middle of the coconut. Take a hammer or the blunt edge of a heavy butcher knife, and just whack along that line until the coconut splits open. You ll turn the coconut about 3 or 4 times, just banging along that line, and then poof--your coconut is split in two. It sounds magical, doesn t it.

Things to keep in mind: 1. Not all coconuts are created equal. Some are drier than others, some are heavier, some are bigger, some are smaller, some are fresher, but the method for these is the same, which means that some will open faster than other sometimes, I ve opened a coconut after just tapping around the equator once.. 2. Everyone opens a coconut a little differently. My husband can open a coconut faster than I can--he s a bit stronger, I m a bit more cautious. But the end result is always the same.

After you ve got the coconut open, then what. Well, the then what is up to you. You can choose to break your coconut into smaller pieces, remove the meat, and enjoy it raw, or you can do things the easy way and wrap your coconut halves in foil, place in a 400 F. oven for an hour, remove the halves and let them cool for a bit, and then remove the meat, which will come out way easier. You can blend raw coconut pieces with the juice and a couple of cups of water and then strain the liquid out through a cheesecloth to make raw coconut milk. Or you can blend the baked coconut pieces with the juice and a couple cups of water to make coconut milk that s similar to canned. You can shred the meat and toast it and then use it to garnish a pretty dessert or eat it as a snack. Whatever you do, it ll be delicious.
